Details on Curiosa
Pitchfork has early details on Curiosa, the Cure's summer tour with Interpol, the Rapture, and Mogwai - once a rumor, now seemingly confirmed, and impressive to say the least. Not a band to be missed on there. There will also be a second stage with a rotating lineup, and they'll all stop in NYC on July 31 at a venue still to be determined. With a second stage, my guess is Jones Beach (ugh) or Randall's Island (ugh). Still, this should be awesome.
I've always wanted to see the Cure live - they are known for putting on a great show (mediocre Coachella reviews aside). Interpol and the Rapture also bring it, and hopefully they'll each throw some new material into their sets. (Note to Interpol - the same 12 songs in the same order won't cut it anymore.) And Mogwai are always fun. Their Rock Action show at Irving Plaza was the loudest gig I've ever been to - absolutely blistering walls of sound (in a good way). Kevin Shields apparently called them the loudest band he'd ever seen, even louder than MBV on the Loveless tour. Nice.
Last night's gig
Well, no "Fighting in a Sack" at last night's Shins gig (despite my best efforts) but the setlist was still a treat. It was drastically reworked from earlier in the year - 3 or 4 songs I'd never heard before (perhaps new?), plus at least one cover (a hilarious take on Dio's "Holy Diver"). It was also heavier on Oh, Inverted World, with "Pressed in a Book" and closer "One by One All Day" being especially awesome. The Shins have such a great time on stage - talking to the crowd, joking around, goofing off - that I don't think I'd ever get sick of seeing them live. They called the Bowery Ballroom their "home away from home" last night and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Coolfer has some more details on Lollapalooza's stop in NYC on August 16 and 17. Sonic Youth, Morrissey, and Modest Mouse will headline day 1, and the Pixies, Flaming Lips, and Gomez will headline day 2. And day 1 is a Monday and day 2 is a Tuesday. Brilliant. The other bands hold their own, but this tour is all about Sonic Youth and the Pixies for me. So it seems I'll be spending a couple days at Randall's Island this summer. Glad to see Perry is looking out for us 9-to-5'ers.
In case it sounds like I'm complaining, well, I am. But I am glad that NYC is one of only two Lollapalooza dates for the Pixies this summer. Now what I'm really pulling for is a secret club gig the weekend before.
